  The University of Miami recognizes bridges enhanced with composite materials.
  The Innovative Bridge is the first concrete bridge on the UM campus, completely replacing the steel reinforcement/prestress with composite materials.
  University of Miami (Miami, FL, USA) at the Florida Institute of Engineering (FES, Tallahassee, FL) / Florida American Engineering Corporation Council (ACEC-FL, Tallahassee, Florida, USA) 2018 Annual Meeting Approved. Not only won the Engineering Excellence Award, but also won the overall concept award for the UM Innovation Bridge. The award recognizes a team led by Antonio Nanni, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering, who have made innovative and outstanding contributions to the design and construction of the first concrete bridge on the UM campus instead of steel.
  Located on the Coral Gables campus, the bridge is 70 feet long and connects the campus to the stadium. This project provides a quantifiable proof of concept for the use of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites in this configuration. The university began construction of the bridge in November 2015; it was completed in May 2016.
